About Smith & Fong Plyboo
Smith & Fong started around 1989 in the USA by Dan smith. On the premise that bamboo offered so many unique opportunities and solutions to the world’s social and environmental challenges.
At the beginning Plyboo explored with bamboo boxes, integrating form and function, making containers that were aesthetically pleasing, and useful. Within 4 years they had begun manufacturing bamboo flooring and quickly exhausted their manufacturing capacity in Taiwan. Moving their operations to China, they converted a tea – processing plant into a factory that produced bamboo flooring.
Their HQ in San Francisco, they changed their business structure and soon began to distribute the first bamboo flooring in the USA under their brand name Plyboo. In 1996, they launched their bamboo plywood range in the USA market.
Smith & Fong incorporated in 1997 and spent the remainder of the decade developing new sizes and applications for their bamboo and flooring and plywood lines.
In 2000, they launched their bamboo strand line of flooring. The strand differs from typical bamboo flooringin that the bamboo is not cut into strips and laminated, but instead thrashed and pressed into dense logs. The logs are sliced and fabricated into flooring or plywood, creating a harder, denser material with an entirely new bamboo aesthetic.
Smith & Fong expanded its product line agian 2001, introducing a line of plywood and flooring products made entirely of coconut palm and marketing under the Durapalm brand. True to their environmental ideals, the palm trees from which the wood is milled are coconut palms that no longer yield fruit.
With the later additions of Forest Stewardship Council ( FSC ) Pure Bamboo and Soy-Based Formaldehyde – Free binders, Smith & Fong now offers a wide range of sustainable design solutions into the international marketplace.
